About the Playwright
Kevin M Reese has been entertaining people most of his adult life-- first as an actor, then
director, teacher and producer, now as a Dad and a playwright.
Born and raised in Elkhart, IN, Kevin M. Reese (get it? KMR Scripts) was part of a HUGE family (46 aunts and uncles!). He graduated from high school in St. Joseph, MO. After working on his BA in Theatre at the School of the Ozarks ('82) and his Masters Degree in Musical Theatre Vocal Performance at Oklahoma City University ('86), Kevin spent ten years traveling the mid-west as a typical "gypsy" actor, working at such theatres as Music Theatre of Wichita (KS), Minnesota Rep, Arrow Rock Lyceum Theatre (MO), and the Crown Uptown Dinner Theatre (KS). He even had a couple stints as Co-Founder/Producer for the City Lights Theatre in Wichita, KS, and Children's Theatre of Medford (OK). In 1988, he joined the Wichita Children's Theatre Professional Touring Company (KS), performing in cities and towns throughout the Midwest. The following year, Kevin signed on to manage the Touring Company. In that capacity he put his talents to work not only in performing but also in directing, writing, and composing the touring shows and numerous other WCT productions as well. And during his eight years as Tour Manager, the WCT Touring Company's schedule grew from the original two-and-a-half months to today's seven-month season.
If someone would have told him twnty years ago that he'd end up a playwright and composer, Reese would have laughed at them. But after years of scouring play catalogues for scripts that didn't preach, patronize, or insult the intelligence of today's youth, Reese decided it would be easier to just create his own. The result is a collection of 70 lively and fun-loving plays and musicals tested before millions of young people by professional actors. Today, Kevin continues to produce new works, writing as much as his "real job," being a stay-at-home Dad, will allow. His complete catalog of plays can be seen at KMR Scripts
In writing his plays, Reese calls on his experiences as:
ACTOR - he performed for almost a million kids during his years as an actor
DIRECTOR - he's directed scores of professional productions
EDUCATOR - he has conducted over a hundred workshops for elementary age through college and community theatre on Creative Dramatics, Acting, Directing, Playwrighting, Improvisation, Stage Dialects, and Producing. His favorite workshops are those helping theatres develop programs for child actors and child/family audiences.
PRODUCER - he has founded and run two professional theatres
DAD - His most-important title
Kevin was born and raised in the Methodist Church. His family helped start (and literally build) Hillcrest UMC in Elkhart, Indiana, back in the 60s. Like many young men, he heard a calling to the ministry when he was in Jr. High School. It wasn't until after his first year of college, when he was performing the duties of a summer pastoral intern at Hillcrest UMC that he realized the voice he heard calling to him was just one of the many he would hear in the coming years: his imagination. It was then that he realized God had a use for him through drama. He went to college and grad school, spent 5 years as a gypsy actor, then went on to directing, managing, and producing-- learning the "nuts and bolts" of theatre and acting. He considers himself very fortunate to have come to the realization that he can do the most for God by helping those that are "on the front lines" help others. Kevin has spent his time in the limelight, he now dedicates himself to "helping others help others."
Kevin is a member of the Dramatists Guild of America and ASCAP. He has been a Certified Lay Speaker with the United Methodist Church, a commissioned Stephen Minister, serves on his local church's Worship Committee, and runs the sound board for the Praise Band at his church. He enjoys a fascinating hobby of home-brewing beer (he gives more away than he drinks!), actually enjoys mowing his yard, and plays Nintendo and X-Box with his kids (they're getting better than him!).
Kevin is a stay-at-home Dad in a small Kansas town with his wife, four children (12, 13, 16, and 18 years!), two cats, two dogs, and occasionally, some goldfish.
