A Play About Jesus' Last Supper -- From the Viewpoint of the Women Who Served Him

Not Your Typical Last Supper Play

Imagine your congregation settling into their seats on Maundy Thursday. They've come to many such Maundy Thursday Services. Perhaps one year they saw the Last Supper reenacted, perhaps another year there was a moving sermon and a foot-washing ceremony. However, THIS year they are in for something completely different. Beneath the Upper Room (BTUR) is the story of the Last Supper from a new point of view, a new perspective.

A New Perspective

BENEATH THE UPPER ROOM tells the story of Jesus' Last Supper--but from the vantage point of the women serving the Lord's meal.  All the action takes place in the kitchen area that lies beneath the Upper Room where Jesus and his disciples are meeting.    It's about Jesus and the women:   We hear the hopes and dreams of the women as they prepare the meal, and we hear their unique analysis of what's going on in the Upper Room as each returns from serving their respective part of the Seder Meal to Jesus and His disciples.  Their concerns are really no different than ours today, but tying them into the events surrounding Jesus' Passion gives us a new perspective on what took place 2000 years ago--and possibly a new perspective on our lives  and our Faith today.

Spreading Like Wildfire

Since its first production in 2006, BTUR has been presented at almost 100 churches all across the country. With no advertising, the show's popularity has spread via word-of-mouth, the number of productions steadily increasing. This year, we decided to contact churches via email to let them know how easily they can present this unique short play to their congregation.

Simple Script Requirements

Most churches have an abundance of women who would like to participate in a play-- but most plays (especially Last Supper plays) are written for a majority of men actors. This is another area where BTUR is unique. The 30-minute play calls for a cast of 10 Women, 3 Men, 3 Children, and your Pastor. The setting is a bare stage with 3 tables-- and most churches have access to biblical period tunics and robes (oftentimes used for Christmas pageants). We have endeavored to make producing BENEATH THE UPPER ROOM as easy as possible. One low fee ($50) covers the rental of the CD and performance royalty for up to 3 performances. The 30-minute show (one hour, if communion is served to your congregation) can be rehearsed in as little as 6 weeks, meeting twice per week for an hour. There is lots of helpful information on our website. Order your perusal script ($5 plus shipping) today.

Production Packet

To make it as easy as possible, we have compiled a collection of files-- everything you need to successfully produce the play-- that can be easily downloaded. One fee ($50 download/$65 CD) covers performance royalty, rehearsal materials and LOTS of helpful tips, hints and notes from the playwright, Kevin M Reese. You even get his home phone and email address so you can contact him directly if you have any questions. He loves to visit with people about the show!
