Quotes & Statements
- "My favorite thing is to sit back and watch the audience's faces. There is a wonderful moment-- and it happens at different places in the show-- where you can tell the "get it." The moment they realize that this is NOT your typical Last Supper play. A sort of synapsis or point of epiphany where they release any apprehension they had of sitting through another version of 13 guys breaking bread and saying 'Is it I, Lord?' There is a sort of intellectual release where they turn their imaginations on and see where the cast will take them next. I've written over 70 plays and this is the one that does it for me. The magic of Theatre!" -- Kevin M Reese
- "My favorite character? Hands down: Ezekiel. He's my Dad. My Dad passed away 5 years before I started writing BTUR. When I knew I wanted an "everyman" character to be a sort of narrator, I knew what character type I would use to do that. Now, I wrote it for a younger version of my Dad (30s or 40s) but I had an older fellow to the role in the first production in 2005 and he was so wonderful. Now I can't see anyone but someone my fathers final age (70s) doing the role. That's not to say a younger actor can't do it effectively-- but in my imagination, Ezekiel is "every-grandpa." -- Kevin M Reese
- "For years I couldn't keep the performance royalties I earned. It just didn't seem right to accept money for a story about Jesus. We were charging churches the royalty fee but I would just turn around and send it to the church in Iowa that had the first production. I have since come to the realization that God likes what I do for a living-- writing plays, which results in royalty when they're performed." -- Kevin M Reese
- "I don't often ponder 'the fruit of my labor.' I don't sit back and wonder about or analyze my plays. I'm just a story-teller. I've often been in the audience of one of my plays and had to go to my computer afterwards to check if I actually wrote a particular line. I marvel at how witty I used to be." -- Kevin M Reese
- "Hindsight is always 20-20. I never dreamed I would be a playwright. But now I look back on my life and I see how my path has been "funneled" to this profession. The nurturing of my imagination, developing my ability to write dialogue through the use of my journals, lots of things that I see now add up to "playwright." -- Kevin M Reese
