Promotion Tips
This is where we'll post Tips and Info that can help with the promotion of your performances of Beneath the Upper Room. New tips are constantly being added, so be sure to check back.
-
GENERAL
- Remember you will have an automatic increase in attendance just because of the fact that this isn't a "regular" service.
- Remember that each member of your cast has friends and relatives that will attend.
- Don't forget to take an offering! Not to be cynical, but take advantage of the generosity and convictions of your audience. They will want to thank you for your performance.
- Be sure to have plenty of "Welcome" materials for all the new visitors to your church.
- Do not expect crowds to just show up. You HAVE to be pro-active in promoting BTUR.
-
PRESS RELEASES
- Many newspapers have a standard format they require in press releases while other's don't really care. Find out which one your newspaper is or your release may go directly into the wastebasket.
- Be sure to have contact information easy to find on your release so they can contact you for more information.
- Plan ahead. It's better to get your release to the newspaper 4 weeks early (so they can plan any follow-up interviews, etc) than wait until one week before your performance. That may mean the difference between just getting into the Community Calender and getting a full-blown story.
- Find a Hook. Help them find a unique angle in your story. If you have a tie-in with Kevin M Reese, the playwright, that is often enough to warrent extra news space. Newspapers don't like to print boring stories.
- If you can, send a rehearsal shot photograph along with your press release. Be sure to identify everyone in the photo.
- Nowadays, it is acceptable to email your press release. We suggest attaching it to your email as a PDF attachment. You can then also attach a photo or two as well.
